Maybe you still remember the WIP pics of my display base, i have painted it and this is what it looks like now:
So i thought it might be fun to make a tutorial to paint this base, so don't wait and hit that read more button !
Before we start i would like to inform you that this is my first tutorial i make so if you see things that can better of you got other tips for me, just mention it i really like to read feedback and it can make the next tutorial even better!
1. Weapons of choice
-old GW paints
Astronomican grey
Mechrite red
Mordian blue
Chaos black
Ultramarines blue
Codex gray
vermin brown
ice blue
-new GW paints
Dryad bark
Caledor sky
-Army painter warpaints
strong tone ink
dark tone ink
2. Base coating and dry brushing
First paint the hole base Dryad bark, the rocks Codex grey and the floor Mechrite red when dry paint the square motif with Calador sky. Dry brush the rocks Astronomican grey and the sand on the base with a mix of 1:1 Astronomican grey : Dryad bark. Base coat the space marine helmet with mordrian blue.
3. washing
wash the whole base with a 1:1 mix of strong tone ink : dark tone ink.Because the base is in some kind of under attack city it has to look burnt and damaged so use a lot wash on the floor pieces.. The helmet is washed with watered down Dark tone ink.
4. Highlights and finishing the rocks
The floor can be highlighted with mechrite red and Caledore sky, to do this make sure you dont paint every square hole, so you still got the damaged effect. Make 1:1 mix of strong tone ink and vermin brown and put this on place in the rock where dirty water has flowed(that always give a orange brown track) The floor can be fished now but i make a burnt effect on it so this mix is also washed over the floor piece.
5. final touches
The burnt effect is made with a 1:1 mix of Chaos black and Dark tone ink put this on the floor(and other areas you would like to make burnt) and than dip a lot of paint away with your finger..(yeah finger painting!)
To finish the helmet paint the eyes Mechrite red and wash theme with Dark tone ink, highlight the helmet with Ultramarines blue and a 1:1 mix of Ultramarines blue and Ice blue.
I hope this tutorial is very helpful!
